The APM vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, has said the party is targeting not less than two-thirds of the 103 million registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Daura stated this yesterday in Abuja during the inauguration of the National Campaign Management Committee (NCMC) of the Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organization (MDPCO).
Daura described the rise in the national voters’ register to 103 million, as disclosed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as a landmark achievement.
“Going by what has been presented to the public, they said the voter registration has hit over 100 million, and to be precise, they quoted 103 million Nigerians have registered to vote.
“Now, this is a landmark achievement. Because since democracy started in this country, I don’t think we have reached this figure in terms of voter registration,” Daura said.
He said the figure makes the 2027 contest more significant for political parties, noting that courting the majority of voters would be a herculean task.
“For us that are in the political arena, it is something very, very, very important. And what makes it important is that we are struggling to make sure that we are courting the majority of these voters,” he said.
Daura said the APM is aiming for a large share of the registered voters.
“So we are aiming to get nothing less than two-thirds of the 103 million,” he said.
The vice-presidential candidate said there is no shortcut to winning votes other than canvassing with quality programmes, warning against rigging.
“A lot of those who are thinking that there is a way to get votes other than canvassing for them, telling the people how qualitative you are, your programmes, and the rest of it, maybe there are those who may think there is a shortcut.
“Well, this time around, the struggle is for real. We are not going to let them escape with it. We must make sure that everything is done in accordance with the law and the Electoral Act. And for those who really want to rig, that they can pull a fast one, well, they have a surprise coming,” he said.
He said the APM’s presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, represents the reset Nigeria needs, describing the party’s ticket as a winning team.
“With just barely 100 days remaining for the elections, we just have to get the right people with quality, with focus, with determination, with resolution… And that is why we carefully went for the best… We have a winning team,” Daura added.
Also speaking, APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, charged members of the newly inaugurated committee to work with party structures to deliver victory.
“I want us to understand that the project here is one. How can we deliver Seyi Makinde and Lawal Daura and form the government in Nigeria, which is one goal. It is not an easy task, but that does not make it impossible.
“We are bound to encounter challenges. We are bound to disagree with one another. But our ability to manage our internal problems is what Nigeria wants to see,” Dantalle said.
He said members of the committee are from different social, religious and political backgrounds, and urged unity.
“You must work with the structures of the party so that all of us will be on the same page… If we work together, we will have better results,” he said.
