Friendships are often among the most cherished relationships in life. In the entertainment industry, they can also become part of a celebrity’s public image, with fans investing emotionally in the bonds they see on stage, on screen, and across social media. In this feature, Weekend Trust looks at Nigerian celebrities whose once-admired friendships eventually faded, fractured, or slipped into distance.
Over the years, Nigerian celebrities have formed friendships that appeared unbreakable. They celebrated milestones together, collaborated on projects, defended each other during controversies, and, in some cases, built careers side by side. Yet many of those relationships eventually fractured, sometimes quietly and at other times in full public view.
One of the most significant examples in Nigerian entertainment remains the relationship between Don Jazzy and D’banj. Long before Afrobeats became a global force, the pair were young dreamers trying to carve out a place in the music industry. Their partnership led to the birth of Mo’Hits Records, a label that would become one of the most influential in Nigeria’s music history.
Together, they transformed the careers of several artistes and delivered hit songs that defined an era. Their relationship appeared to go beyond business. They often spoke of each other like brothers, and their chemistry was evident in interviews, performances, and public appearances. For many fans, it was difficult to imagine one without the other.
That perception was shattered in 2012 when Mo’Hits collapsed. Although the separation was largely presented as a professional disagreement involving differing ambitions and business directions, it marked the end of one of the entertainment industry’s most admired partnerships. While both men have occasionally reunited publicly and expressed mutual respect, their friendship never returned to the form that once helped shape Nigerian music.
Another friendship that fascinated fans was that of Wizkid and Tiwa Savage. Their bond became increasingly visible through collaborations such as Malo and Fever, as well as a string of performances and public appearances that showcased their easy chemistry. Tiwa Savage was already known as one of Africa’s leading female artistes, while Wizkid was building himself as one of the continent’s biggest talents, so their friendship appeared natural and effortless.
Fans began talking about their closeness all the time, with many admiring the mutual support they seemed to provide each other on both a personal and professional level. Later on, though, the romance seemed to cool off. The frequency of both artistes’ public appearances reduced, and their once-routine interactions ceased.
Later on, Tiwa Savage admitted that they had arguments, but she did not provide much information. While neither party has openly proclaimed the friendship over, many fans believe the relationship has declined significantly from its initial closeness.
For Harrysong and Kcee, friendship and business became inseparable. Harrysong’s rise to fame was closely associated with Five Star Music, where Kcee and the label’s management supported him. When their love was at its best, they spoke highly of each other and frequently appeared together. Later, disputes over contracts, royalties, and business agreements caused the partnership to fall apart. What started as a fruitful partnership eventually turned into interviews, public allegations, and legal threats.
Perhaps no celebrity relationship has been as chaotic as Tonto Dikeh and social media figure Bobrisky. They were the most talked-about besties in Nigeria’s entertainment industry as they always celebrated each other’s birthdays, accomplishments, and life milestones on social media.
The relationship looked to be based on loyalty and mutual support, particularly during times of public scandal. However, it finally fell apart in a dramatic way. Their fallout played out in front of millions of followers, with allegations and counter-accusations replacing the public admiration that had previously defined their relationship. In recent years, the breakup has become one of the most talked-about celebrity friendship disagreements.
Tonto Dikeh also experienced a highly publicised fallout with actress Angela Okorie. The two actresses were once openly supportive of each other, often projecting solidarity in an industry where competition is intense and public scrutiny even more so. Their bond looked firm, especially given how strongly both women expressed loyalty during public controversies.
Over time, however, tensions emerged, and the relationship soured. Public comments and online exchanges revealed a growing distance between them. For many observers, the collapse of the friendship was surprising because of how strongly both women had once expressed loyalty to one another.
The story of Zlatan and DJ Cuppy also showed how quickly relationships can change in the entertainment industry. Their friendship gained public attention after they collaborated on the hit song Gelato. Beyond the music, their social media interactions suggested a playful relationship that fans enjoyed following.
The situation changed dramatically when DJ Cuppy revealed that Zlatan had allegedly blocked her on social media and stopped communicating with her. The incident remains one of the most puzzling celebrity friendship breakdowns.
Another relationship that attracted attention was that of Iyabo Ojo and Mercy Aigbe. The actresses were once seen as friends and colleagues within the Yoruba film industry, often attending similar events and publicly supporting one another. Over time, however, signs of distance emerged, though the exact reasons have largely remained private.
In Kannywood, similar patterns can also be seen where friendships and working relationships often attract public attention and speculation. The relationship between Ali Nuhu and Adam A. Zango stands out as one of the most discussed. Both are giants of the Hausa film industry and, for years, shared a cordial professional relationship that helped shape the growth of Kannywood.
However, in 2019, a public disagreement between them drew widespread attention. What began as a difference of opinion escalated into a public exchange that spilt onto social media and later carried legal undertones. While efforts were later made to calm tensions, many fans believe the relationship never fully returned to its earlier warmth.
For several years, actress Momee Gombe and singer Hamisu Breaker were also among the most talked-about personalities in northern Nigerian entertainment. They frequently appeared together in music videos, films, and social events, attracting widespread attention from fans. Their close association fuelled constant speculation about the nature of their relationship, although both repeatedly denied being in a romantic relationship.
In recent years, however, their joint appearances have become less frequent. They are no longer seen together as often as before, leaving many fans wondering what may have changed between the two and whether the once-visible bond has quietly faded.
Another notable relationship in the industry is that of film producers Abubakar Bashir Maishadda and Mustapha Alhaji Sheshe. Both men were once known for their strong friendship and successful collaborations, working together on several popular productions, including Ana Dara Ga Dare and Mariya.
At one point, rumours circulated that their relationship had become strained. Speculation increased when Maishadda opened a new business outlet, and Sheshe was noticeably absent among expected guests, a detail fans and observers quickly picked up on.
However, recent developments suggest a shift. The two have been seen together again at film locations and public gatherings, with signs pointing toward a possible reconciliation after a period of distance.
To better understand why celebrity friendships often struggle, communications consultant Shariff Yusuf said fame removes the privacy that most relationships depend on.
“In normal friendships, disagreements can be resolved quietly. But in the entertainment industry, everything happens under public observation. Fans, bloggers and social media users often react before issues are even settled, and that can escalate minor misunderstandings,” he said.
He added that competition also plays a role in creating tension.
“The industry is competitive. Friends may be chasing the same opportunities, awards or endorsements. Even when there is genuine affection, that environment can create pressure over time.”
He further noted that business involvement often complicates personal relationships.
“Many celebrity friendships begin through collaborations or work relationships. Once money, contracts, and career decisions are involved, the dynamics can change. Not every friendship survives that shift.”
For fans, the collapse of a celebrity friendship can be disappointing, especially when the bond appeared genuine. Yet behind the fame, luxury, and carefully curated social media posts are people navigating the same emotions, misunderstandings, and disappointments that affect friendships everywhere. The difference is that when celebrity friendships fall apart, the world is watching.
