Diphtheria: Kano govt rules out school closure over outbreak

The Kano State Government has ruled out the closure of schools or postponement of resumption over the ongoing outbreak of diphtheria in the state.

The government said the current situation does not warrant keeping children away from school.

The spokesperson for the state Ministry of Health, Nabilus Kofar-Naisa, said schools would reopen as scheduled despite decisions by some other states, including Plateau, to postpone resumption over concerns about the disease.

Kofar-Naisa urged parents to closely monitor their children for symptoms of diphtheria and promptly take suspected cases to health facilities for treatment.

He said, “Children showing symptoms should not be allowed to mix with others until they have received appropriate medical attention.”

The spokesperson explained that Kano would proceed with its resumption plans based on the current situation and level of diphtheria infections in the state.
