Founder of ABC Transport Plc, Mr Frank Nneji, has urged the Federal Government to prioritise road infrastructure development, arguing that improved roads are critical to business growth, economic productivity and national development.
Nneji, who was Chairman of the Occasion at the 30th Anniversary Legacy Leadership Lecture and Awards of Julie Chi-Nwaoha in Lagos, said efficient road transportation would reduce business costs, improve logistics and create a more favourable environment for economic activities.
Speaking at the event, which also marked 10 years of On The Highway Africa, he noted that road transport remained the dominant means of movement in Nigeria but received less policy attention than other modes, particularly aviation.
“Statistics show that more than 90 per cent of Nigerians still move by road,” he said, stressing the need for greater government commitment to developing the sector.
According to him, while challenges in the aviation industry often attract immediate national attention and policy discussions, problems confronting road transportation receive comparatively less consideration despite the sector serving a much larger proportion of the population.
Nneji maintained that good roads translate into better business, noting that improved infrastructure would support the movement of goods and people, strengthen logistics operations and stimulate economic growth.
He also called for greater private sector participation in road infrastructure development, advocating road concessions as a way to improve construction quality, maintenance and long-term sustainability.
He said government should explore partnerships with private investors to address infrastructure gaps and ensure that roads are properly maintained.
The transport entrepreneur also highlighted the media’s role in influencing public policy and promoting national development. He urged journalists and media organisations to sustain coverage of issues affecting transportation and logistics, noting that consistent reporting could draw attention to industry challenges and encourage government action.
Nneji was honoured with the Industry Legacy Leadership Award in recognition of his contributions to road transportation, entrepreneurship and national development.
He congratulated the Founder and Publisher of On The Highway Africa, Julie Chi-Nwaoha, on 30 years of reporting the transportation sector, describing her consistency and commitment to industry journalism as commendable.
The anniversary lecture and awards brought together industry stakeholders to reflect on the development of Nigeria’s transportation sector and the role of leadership, infrastructure and media advocacy in shaping its future.
