Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned its 23rd Sahara Go Recycling Hub at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja, Lagos, as part of efforts to promote sustainable waste management and create economic opportunities through recycling.
The Foundation said the new facility would help transform recyclable waste into economic value, providing income opportunities for households and strengthening waste recovery systems in communities.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the initiative reflected the organisation’s commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action and community development.
“This initiative aligns with our sustainability and development priorities by transforming waste into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact, supporting climate action and creating livelihood opportunities,” she said.
Menakaya added that the programme demonstrated how communities could combine environmental responsibility with inclusive economic growth.
Air Commodore M.A. Imam, Commander of the 651 Base Services Group, commended the Foundation’s investment in environmental sustainability, stressing the importance of collective action in addressing waste management challenges in growing communities.
Also speaking, Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, said the company was pleased to partner with the Foundation to promote environmental responsibility at the Air Force base.
He reaffirmed Ikeja Electric’s commitment to sustainable partnerships, reliable power supply and supporting the wellbeing of customers, institutions, businesses and communities.
Menakaya said collaboration and community participation remained central to the programme’s long-term impact.
“Through collaboration, innovation and community participation, we are driving long-term environmental impact while improving livelihoods and strengthening community ownership of sustainable practices,” she said.
The commissioning attracted representatives of Sahara Group and its Foundation, Air Force officials, community leaders, volunteers and residents.
Since its inception, the Sahara Go Recycling initiative has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of recyclable waste and directly and indirectly supported over 2,000 livelihoods.
The Foundation said these opportunities span waste collection, sorting, logistics and community-based enterprises, helping participants earn income while promoting responsible waste disposal.
Through partnerships and community engagement, the programme seeks to expand recycling activities, recover economic value from waste and encourage sustainable lifestyles.
Sahara Group Foundation said it would continue expanding the initiative under its broader mission of building sustainable communities through EXTRApreneurship.
